"Put your money into accessories. You could create a million different looks" - Iris Apfel
Usually attributed to fashion, the same concept exists within kitchen & bath design. Plumbing and cabinet hardware are referred to as the jewelry of the home. With finish and material trends shifting, How can you choose the right finishes for your personality?

The New Basic
Urban dictionary describes Basic as "devoid of defining characteristics that might make something interesting, extraordinary, or just simply worth devoting time or attention to." Oil rubbed bronze is the new basic. There is no longer anything special, exciting or extraordinary about oil rubbed bronze. Big box stores being the exception, many supply houses are no longer keeping ORB in stock. As an alternative, try updating to a transitional Brushed Nickel, or even a Matte Black.

Shine On
Polished finishes and materials are being spotted everywhere. Mixing textures is the best way to accentuate the trend. For example, a polished copper or brass cabinet pull is contrasted by a matte black background is a great way to let the metal shine. Another great trend is pairing polished metals with all white everything. Installing a chrome faucet and hardware now, then replacing them with polished nickel later could give the kitchen a face-lift in between remodels.
Matte Black
This finish has taken the design world by storm. Residential and commercial/hospitality are all riding the matte black wave. My personal style gravitates to the use of MB on traditional designs. This gives a masculine and updated vibe to classic looks. In the Mid Century style homes, that are being renovated now, this is a great nod to a Mod home vibe.
Every finish has its own personality when added to the overall design. Knowing what feeling you want to convey in your space will help you decide which to choose. Planning ahead will always be beneficial. Knowing your budget will be key in deciding what finishes you will end up with.
